Leptogenys is a genus of ants (Formicidae) from the subfamily of the primeval ants (Ponerinae).

features

The body size of the long and thin ants varies greatly. The smaller species are about four millimeters long, whereas the largest species have a total body length of up to 15 millimeters. The mandibles either have a triangular basic shape or are thin and sickle-shaped. They have no pronounced dentition on the chewing surface, but only a single tooth on the tip of the mandible. The head shield ( clypeus ) is bulged forward and reaches close to the mandibles. The head looks elongated. The tibiae of the posterior pair of legs each have a comb-like spur and another, much smaller spine. Leptogenys have an effective poison sting. In almost all species, if not all species, reproduction can be taken over by ergatomorphic queens.

distribution

These ants are common in tropical areas around the world. Depending on the species, they either colonize rainforests or arid zones. There are 217 species known.

Way of life

The nests are created both above ground in loose waste as well as below ground. The above-ground nests often only serve as temporary dwellings, whereas pure earth nests are also used over long periods of time. The workers hunt alone or in groups, both during the day and at night. Together they can also transport larger prey into the nest. The zoophage diet consists mostly of insects , arachnids and other arthropods . Some species specialize in termites , others in woodlice .
