The Leskeaceae are a moss - Family of the order Hypnales . It is named after Nathanael Gottfried Leske (1751–1786), an important natural scientist and geologist. He was a professor at the University of Leipzig.

description

The plants are usually small to medium-sized, the stems prostrate to upright and branched irregularly or regularly. A central strand in the trunk cross-section is weak or absent. Paraphylls and pseudo- paraphylls can be present or absent. The leaves are pointed short to long and often wrinkled. The lamina cells are isodiametric to linear-diamond-shaped and smooth or papillary. Leaf-wing cells are more or less differentiated and usually square. The leaf vein is usually simple and ends before the tip of the leaf.

The species are dioecious or autocratic (antheridia and archegonia on different branches on the same plant). The seta is elongated, often twisted, usually smooth, the spore capsule erect, straight or curved, the peristome is often reduced.

distribution

The distribution area are the tropical to temperate zones of the northern and southern hemisphere. The mosses are soil dwellers or epiphytes .

Systematics

The demarcation of the family is difficult. According to Frey / Fischer / Stech, several genera traditionally included in the Leskeaceae family were transferred to the Pseudoleskeaceae and Pseudoleskeellaceae families . Leskeaceae now comprises 115 species in 15 genera worldwide:

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland there is only one species from the family: Poly-fruited Leskemoos, Leskea polycarpa .
