Leskea polycarpa ( Many-fruited Leskemoos ) is aspecies of hardwood moss in the Leskeaceae family .

features

The small plants with creeping, 2 to 4 centimeters long and densely branched stems that adhere to the substrate with rhizoids form dirty-green to yellow-green, dull, loose lawns. The branches are about 3 to 5 millimeters long and prostrate to upright. Lanceolate paraphyllia are scarce. The stem leaves, gradually tapering from a heart-shaped base, stick out when moist, and lie loosely when dry. They have two folds at the base, are 0.8 to 1.2 millimeters long, hollow and often somewhat asymmetrical. The leaf margins are whole and turned back at the bottom on one or both sides. The strong vein extends to the tip of the leaf. The lamina cells are fairly uniform in the entire leaf area, short rhombic to rounded, slightly longer at the leaf base. There is a papilla on the back of each cell. Branch leaves are similar but smaller, 0.5 to 0.8 millimeters long.

The spore capsule on the seta , which is about 10 millimeters long, is cylindrical, straight or curved and upright to slightly inclined. The capsule lid is tapered to a point, the hood is cap-shaped. The finely crenulated spores are 12 to 16 micrometers in size. Spore ripening time is in May and June. The species is usually very abundant in fruit.

Location claims and distribution

Leskea polycarpa is particularly widespread in the floodplains of rivers, where it usually grows on the bark of poplar and willow trees, and less often on rock. As a moss of the low-lying areas, the species usually only occurs up to heights of 400, maximum 700 meters.

The distribution area is the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere with occurrences in Europe, Asia, North America and in North Africa.
