Lesser Blum (born March 6, 1934 in Berlin - † April 24, 2016 ) was an American physical chemist who worked in the field of the theory of liquids .

Life

In 1942 Blum came to Argentina as a Jewish refugee . He studied chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires until 1956 , where he received his doctorate. He then went into industry, but later returned to the University of Buenos Aires and became a university lecturer there in 1960. He continued his education in the field of theoretical chemistry, especially statistical physics, during a stay in Brussels. In 1967 he left Argentina and went to Rice University in Houston , where he researched fluids in thermodynamic equilibrium and in non-equilibrium. In 1968 he moved to the University of Puerto Rico , where he stayed until his retirement. Blum published more than 250 scientific papers, especially on the statistical mechanics of many-body systems with Coulomb interaction (electrolytes). Joel Lebowitz was one of his well-known co-authors .

In 1977 he was awarded a Guggenheim scholarship . In 1980 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 2003 he received the Joel Henry Hildebrand Award from the American Chemical Society .
