Lesser Slave River

The Lesser Slave River ( Cree : Iyaghchi Eennu Sepe , translated: "River of the foreign people") is a river in central Alberta in Canada. It is one of the main tributaries of the Athabasca River .

The Little Slave Lake and the Lesser Slave River were the main route of communication and transportation to the Peace River District until the beginning of the 20th century . This only changed with the completion of the Northern Alberta Railways railway line .

The river has its origin in the Little Slave Lake. The mean discharge at the outflow from the lake is 40 m³ / s. The Lesser Slave River flows 61 km to the east before flowing into the Athabasca River from the left near the village of Smith . Measured from the source of the South Heart River , the total length is over 280 km.
