Slave Lake is a municipality in the north of the Canadian province of Alberta . It is located southeast of Lesser Slave Lake at the intersection of Alberta Highway 2 and Alberta Highway 88 .

In 1994, the city hosted the Arctic Winter Games (Arctic Winter Games), an organization of circumpolar sports and culture. The place is the birthplace of Walter Patrick Twinn , a person of the First Nations and a Canadian senator.

history

The area of ​​present-day Slave Lake was first discovered by David Thompson in 1799. After its discovery, many fur trading posts were established around Slave Lake. The Hudson's Bay Company post was at the drain of the lake. The first Sawridge settlement was wiped out by a flood in the 1930s, later rebuilt elsewhere and renamed Slave Lake. The place became independent in 1965. On May 15, 2011, a devastating fire destroyed a large part of the city. At times the entire population was evacuated.

In 1994 the city hosted the Arctic Winter Games .
