The Lestidiidae are a family of small to medium-sized predatory fish living in the deep sea ( Bathypelagial ) from the order of the lizardfish relatives (Aulopiformes). They occur in all tropical, subtropical or temperate seas.

features

The fish look like small barracudas , have no scales and are a maximum of 55 cm long. Diagnostic features of the family are ventral , yellowish shimmering luminous organs , which have developed from the tissue of the midgut gland (hepatopancreas).

Systematics

All four genera of the Lestidiidae belonged to the Barracudinas (Paralepididae) until recently . They were first combined in 1953 by RR Harry in a tribe Lestidini, which in 2015 became an independent family by Ghedotti and colleagues. The Lestidiidae are the sister group of a common clade of Alepisauridae and Barracudinas.
