Lestradea is a genus of cichlids that is endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. The genus was named after A. Lestrade, who created a large collection of Tanganyika cichlids.

features

Lestradea species are 12 to 14 cm tall, elongated and have strikingly large eyes. The mouth is covered with two to three rows of conical or three-pointed teeth. All are the same size, those of the inner row (s) are curved backwards. The teeth have a deep-seated point on the side of the tooth shaft. The pharyngeal teeth are thin and have a triangular arrangement. The caudal fin is forked.

Lestradea species are silvery, head and back are gray or yellowish brown.

Way of life

Lestradea species are wandering, semi-pelagic plankton eaters and fast swimmers. They are mouthbrooders . The approximately 20 eggs, which have a diameter of approx. 20 mm, are taken into the mouth by the female after being laid.

species

There are two types of which one occurs in the northern and the other in the southern part of Lake Tanganyika.

Lestradea stappersii was originally considered a subspecies of Lestradea perspicax .
