Letraset

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Letraset is an Ashford-based company that operates worldwide in the field of fonts, image processing and graphic design (digital design). This name is particularly well known for one of their products: the rub-on letters.

Letraset has been part of the Colart Group since 2012 .

Rub-on letters

Two sheets of partly used lettering made by Letraset (left) and Transotype (right).

Rub-on letters were sold under the company and brand name Letraset , especially before computers became widespread today . Up until the 1980s, these were a popular way of applying neat-looking fonts to surfaces with professional graphic designers , engineering offices or layouters right up to kindergarten handicrafts. The letters on a transparent film are not glued on with conventional glue , but rather rubbed individually from the film onto the underlying medium with a hard pen or a special grinding spoon . This makes them very durable, they look very professional after a short practice, and you don't have to worry about glue stains. In addition to letters in different fonts and sizes, sheets with graphic elements are also available.

Letraset is still available today, but has lost much of its popularity compared to the capabilities of inkjet and laser printers . The use of media that is difficult to print has remained: signs, smaller vehicle lettering, for example if there is no cutting plotter for professional film lettering.

One of the best known fonts created by Letraset is Compacta from 1963.

Letracopy

Color thermal transfer tool in the form of foils and foil rolls for the partial coloring of black and white photocopies and laser prints. With the advent of color copiers in the late 1980s, letracopy became increasingly meaningless.

Desktop publishing

At the beginning of the 1990s, Letraset was a provider of DTP software: DesignStudio for layouts, ColorStudio for color and ImageStudio for black and white image processing, LetraStudio for title set and FontStudio for font and logo development. In 1990 DesignStudio 2 was a serious competitor to the Aldus PageMaker .

Today's product range

Letraset produces, among other things, marker pens, assembly adhesives, envelopes, stickers and T-shirts.

In addition, the company still offers digital fonts for download on its homepage. These are protected by copyright and are usually chargeable. The fonts installed on a PC can usually be recognized by the LET identifier in their name.
