The Dahmeshöved lighthouse is a beacon in the municipality of Dahme in the Ostholstein district in Schleswig-Holstein.
history
It was built in 1878/79 according to plans by Ludwig Alexander Veitmeyer on a Höved ( Low German for hill ) and was used for shipping on the Lübeck-Gedser-Weg in the Lübeck and Mecklenburg Bays . As a 28.8 m high, octagonal brick tower with an iron lantern surrounded by a gallery , it stands about two kilometers south of Dahme.
The lighthouse, which is a listed building, had an air mist sound system or a fog horn . Their tone was 300 Hz and sent the Morse code "D" (long, short, short). In 1982 the existing red paint was removed with white tape without replacement and the red brick masonry was exposed.
The beacon was originally a flame that was fed with petroleum and emitted its light to the outside via a Fresnel lens . The switch to gas took place in 1925, and later the switch to electricity. Currently (2018) a 400 W metal halide lamp is installed, which with a light intensity of approx. 140,000 candela has a range of approx. 23 nm or 43 km .
During the GDR era, the lighthouse was an important navigation point for people who fled the GDR via the Baltic Sea .
Today it can be visited from time to time and also serves as a registry office . The house and some outbuildings are used privately.
On July 7, 2011, the Federal Republic of Germany issued a special postage stamp (€ 90 cents) from Dahmeshöved as part of the series of lighthouses .
