Career

Ludwig Alexander Veitmeyer was born on October 12, 1820 as the son of a realtor in Berlin. He lost his parents early and was taken to the Cauersche institute in Charlottenburg . After attending the Joachimsthal High School and the municipal trade school in Berlin, he began practical training and activities in the Borsig machine factory in Berlin. He completed an apprenticeship in carpentry and locksmithing. From 1840 further training took place at the Beuth'schen Gewerbeinstitut (from 1866 "Royal Trade Academy"). From 1844 he was involved in the construction of the Berlin-Hamburg railway ( railway bridge atWittenberge ), then he was employed as a senior engineer in the machine factory and iron foundry F. Wöhlert in Berlin.

In 1845 he went on a study trip to France on behalf of the Prussian Ministry for Public Works and at Peter Beuth's instigation. He was supposed to study the beacon system there and to do the acceptance of the beacon optics for the Brüsterort lighthouse , which had been manufactured by a French company. In 1847 Veitmeyer traveled again to Paris in connection with the delivery of the Fresnel apparatus for the Darßer Ort lighthouse . With that he had found a focus of his further work. In 1866 he constructed the rotating apparatus for the optics of the Horst lighthouse and in 1878/1879 the Dahmeshöved lighthouse was built according to his plans.

After a few years, Veitmeyer settled in Berlin as a freelance "civil engineer". He was now mainly concerned with issues of urban water supply and drainage . On behalf of the Minister of Commerce, Veitmeyer took James Hobrecht and Eduard Wiebe on a trip to England and France in 1860 to study the latest developments in modern sewer and drainage systems.

Veitmeyer was also involved in the establishment of German patent protection and was a member of the Imperial Patent Office for a long time . His donation of a total of 495 titles to the Patent Office library between 1890 and 1899 was the largest private donation it has ever received.

From 1881 to 1898 he was chairman of the Association of German Machine Engineers (VDMI). In 1895 he was awarded honorary membership. Veitmeyer donated a bequest of 30,000 marks to the association, from the interest of which a prize was awarded annually. In 1972 it was combined with other foundations to form a fiduciary foundation under the name "DMG Foundation".

Veitmeyer was a member of the Berlin Masonic Lodge To the Three Seraphim .

He remained unmarried throughout his life.
