The Slangkop lighthouse ( afrikaans : snakehead ), known in South Africa as Slangkop Lighthouse , is a lighthouse in Kommetjie in the Western Cape Province on the Cape Peninsula , at the southern end of which are the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point . The beacon is intended to warn ships of the rocks and reefs near the coast and is the largest cast iron structure for this purpose in South Africa. It was put into operation in 1919.

history

Entrance to the lighthouse, easy to see the cast iron metal plates.

In May 1900, the steamship Kakapo ran aground off the rocky coast of the Cape Peninsula because the ship's captain had mistaken Chapmans Peak, a few kilometers north, to be the cape. A commission chaired by the Governor of the Cape Region, Sir Francis Hely Hutchinson, then decided on September 29, 1906 to warn the ship's crews of this danger by building a lighthouse. On March 4, 1919, the metal round tower with a fire height of 41 meters and a fire carrier height of 33 meters was put into operation.

Initially, three guards were always entrusted with the operation at the same time. In 1979 the technology was modernized so that the tower could be operated without staff. Nevertheless, the tower is constantly manned by a lighthouse officer .

beacon

As an identifier , Slangkop Lighthouse emits four white flashes of light (Fl (4) W.30s) with a light intensity of 5 million candela every 30 seconds . The range is about 30-33 nautical miles . The electric beacon can continue to be operated by a power generator if the power supply fails.
