Levi Robert Lind

Levi Robert Lind (born July 29, 1906 in Trenton , New Jersey , † September 22, 2008 in Albuquerque , New Mexico ) was an American classical philologist .

Life

Levi Robert Lind, son of John E. and Lydia Nieminen Lind, studied Classical Philology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1929 , his master's degree in 1932 , before he left in 1936 received his doctorate . Levi Robert Lind was subsequently appointed Associate Professor at the University of Kansas in the field of Classical Classical Studies . Lind - he taught Latin , Greek and Humanities - was later appointed Distinguished Professor. In addition, he was entrusted with the management of the Department of Classics from 1947 to 1964. In 1976 he retired from university.

Levi Robert Lind - he stayed in Italy with a Fulbright scholarship between 1954 and 1955 for study purposes - was members of the American Philological Association , the Medieval Academy of America , the Classical Association of the Middle West and South , and the Archaeological Institute of America and Phi Beta Kappa . Lind presided over the Central Labor Committee and from 1948 to 1949 the American Federation of Labor in Lawrence . He was also secretary of the American Committee of the Medieval Latin Dictionary from 1937 to 1941 and representative of the Advisory Council of the American Academy in Rome .

Levi Robert Lind - he was fluent in eight languages - was the author and editor of numerous books and translated various authors from different languages, including Virgil , several medical writers of the Renaissance , André Chénier and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . Lind published collections on Greek tragedy , Roman poetry and poetry from the Italian Renaissance. His interest was also in contemporary poetry, so he published memoirs of Ezra Pound and other contemporary poets. Levi Robert Lind was a poet himself and published two volumes of poetry.
