The Leviathan steamer was built in Govan in 1849 , was the world's first rail ferry and crossed the Firth of Forth in Scotland.

Railway ferry connection Granton - Burntisland

The Leviathan was developed by Robert Napier & Sons designed in Govan and for the Edinburgh and Northern Railway Co built. The Leviathan was a double-ended ferry with two oars.

Traffic began in February 1850, the Granton - Burntisland stretch was 4.5 nautical miles and a crossing took about an hour. Four to five tours were carried out per day, loading and unloading took 15 to 18 minutes.
