Lewis Edward Kay (* around 1961) is a Canadian molecular geneticist , chemist and biochemist at the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto .

Kay grew up in Edmonton . He received a BA from the University of Alberta in 1983 and a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1988. before joining the National Institutes of Health as a postdoctoral fellow . In 1992 he received his first professorship (assistant professor) at the University of Toronto , and in 1994 he was given a full professorship there for molecular genetics, biochemistry and chemistry. From 1995 to 1997 he was a Sloan Research Fellow .

Kay is one of the most cited chemists, especially in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR spectroscopy). It has (as of January 2019) an h-index of 125.

Biomolecular for the development of modern NMR spectroscopy to analyze the dynamics and functional structures, including molecular machines and rare protein - conformations ( "For the development of modern NMR spectroscopy for studies of biomolecular structure dynamics and function, Including applications to molecular machines and rare protein conformations ”), he received a Canada Gairdner International Award from the Gairdner Foundation in 2017 .

Kay was also awarded the Flavelle Medal of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002 and the Khorana Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2012. He has been a member of the Royal Society of Canada since 2006, the British Royal Society since 2010 , and the National Academy of Sciences since 2020 . In 2017 he became an officer of the Order of Canada and in 2018 he received the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering .
