Lewis Lindsay Dyche (born March 20, 1857 in Berkeley Springs , West Virginia , † January 20, 1915 or 1916 ) was an American taxidermist .

Lewis Lindsay Dyche had Scottish and Irish ancestors. In the summer of 1857, his parents decided to move to Kansas . The journey was made by ships and ox carts on the old Santa Fé Trail . The family settled at Wakarusa , 15 miles southwest of Topeka . Mother and child did not survive the trip well, but were looked after and looked after by Indians who lived nearby. Lewis Lindsay Dyche initially received only a scant school education and was inferior to his peers. As a teenager, he went to the State Normal School in Emporia . This was followed by studies at the University of Kansas , which he completed in 1884 with two bachelors . Dyche stayed at the University of Kansas. Until 1886 he was Assistant Professor of Zoology, later he became Professor of Comparative Anatomy and in 1890 Professor of Zoology and Curator for Birds and Mammals. In 1900 he became a professor of systematic zoology and taxidermy.

Dyche assembled extensive collections on numerous expeditions to North America, Greenland and the Arctic . He specialized in mammals. After his death in 1891 he groomed the well-known horse Comanche , which was shown together with numerous other groomed animals at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 . From 1911 Dyche also had to provide the state hunting and fishing supervision.

Dyche Hall

The Dyche Hall was named after Dyche , a building on the campus of the University of Kansas that was inaugurated in 1903 and mainly housed the prepared animals exhibited in Chicago in 1893. The structure was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
