Lewis Wolpert, CBE (born October 19, 1929 in Johannesburg , South Africa , † January 28, 2021 ) was a developmental biologist and embryologist working in Great Britain .

Wolpert was the author of various books and textbooks; he has also written science programs for the BBC and columns for the British daily newspaper The Independent . Originally trained as a civil engineer in South Africa, he then moved to London to do research in cell biology and embryology. Most recently he was a professor at University College London .

Wolpert became a member of the Royal Society in 1980 and gave the prestigious Christmas Lecture of the Royal Institution (Origins) in 1986 . From 1989 he was a member of the Academia Europaea . In 1990 he became Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1999 a member of the Royal Society of Literature . He was a member of the American Philosophical Society and an external member of the Polish Academy of Scholarship (PAU) in Krakow . From 1989 he was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa. For 2018 he was awarded the Royal Medal in the field of "Biology".

His wife died of cancer. Wolpert published a book on depression as a disease in 1999, which was also published in German in 2008.

He died in January 2021 at the age of 91.
