Leyla Erbil (* 1931 in Istanbul ; † July 19, 2013 there ) was a Turkish writer .

Life

Erbil attended high school and studied English Philology at the University of Istanbul and worked as a secretary and interpreter. Her first poems were published in 1945, and from 1960 she appeared as the narrator of short stories with which she became known. In the early 1960s she was also involved in the Turkish Labor Party in the field of art and culture. In 1967 she worked at the Turkish consulate in Zurich . Her first novel Tuhaf Bir Kadin ("A Strange Woman") was published in 1971, with which she caused a sensation because of the subjects of women, sexuality and self-determination. Other short stories and novels follow later. The subjects of her books, some of which have been translated into several languages, are often marginalized women.

Your writing style is unmistakable. She mixed old Ottoman terms , uncommon and modern Turkish word creations with foreign words from European languages ​​and dialects, but also often colloquial terms. In doing so, she deliberately ignored the grammatical rules of the written Turkish language. For her unique writing style and contribution to Turkish literature , she was nominated by the PEN for the Nobel Prize in Literature .
