Hürriyet ( German "Freedom" ) is a Turkish- language daily newspaper with an editorial office in Istanbul . Until 2018 it was considered one of the last independent media outlets; Before the 70th anniversary of its founding, its publisher, the Dogan media group , was bought up by the Erdoğan- affiliated Demirören Holding .
history
Hürriyet was founded by Sedat Simavi on May 1, 1948 , with 48 employees and a circulation of 50,000 in the first week. Aydın Doğan acquired the daily newspaper in 1994 during a liquidity crisis .
Ownership
Hürriyet is owned by Demirören Holding . With the takeover of the Dogan Group in 2018, the Turkish conglomerate has developed into the largest media group in Turkey and, in addition to Hürriyet, publishes several other Turkish daily newspapers, including Milliyet , Posta , Fanatik and the English-language Hürriyet Daily News and Economic Review , out. In addition to some smaller special-interest channels, the company also operates the Turkish TV channels Kanal D , CNN Türk and the pay TV provider D-Smart (as of 2020)
Market position
With 280,836 copies printed daily (September 2018), it replaced the daily newspaper Zaman, which had been banned since the attempted coup in 2016 , as the highest-circulation newspaper in Turkey . After the takeover by the Dogan Group, it is in second place after the daily Sabah, which is also close to the government (as of September 2018).
In 2006 the Doğan Group's market share was 60.6% in the newspaper market and 41.6% in the Turkish advertising market as a whole.
Newspaper profile
The tabloid today classifies itself as “liberal-conservative”; Eurotopics describes them as conservative . She advocates EU membership for Turkey . In the head of the newspaper there is a picture of the founder of the state Ataturk and the motto Türkiye Türklerindir ("Turkey belongs to the Turks") next to the lettering Hürriyet in white letters on a black and red background . The newspaper has adopted twenty editorial principles.
Until the end of 2009, the editor-in-chief of Hürriyet was Ertuğrul Özkök , one of the sharpest critics of the Erdoğan government . He was replaced at the beginning of 2010 by the former head of the Ankara office, Enis Berberoğlu, and later Sedat Ergin, who was considered liberal . A well-known columnist is Ahmet Hakan .
Readers' Council
In 2008, on the initiative of the publisher's daughter, Hürriyet created the Hürriyet Okur Meclisi ( Hürriyet Readers 'Parliament ), a readers' committee with an advisory function. It consists of 50 people of both sexes in different age groups and professions. These individuals were chosen in a poll from 8,998 candidates from 47 countries. Members have the right to call meetings with all journalists and managers of Hürriyet. The first meeting took place in Ankara after visiting the Anıtkabir Museum and the Turkish Parliament . In addition to the members, the then editor-in-chief Ertuğrul Özkök and various managers and journalists of the newspaper attended this founding meeting. The President of the Turkish National Assembly, Köksal Toptan , gave a speech in honor of the founding of the Readers' Parliament and praised the function of such an organ for democracy and freedom of the press.
Europe edition

In June 2001, the German-language Hürriyet pages appeared in Germany for the first time, previously exclusively Turkish. The current editor-in-chief of the Europa edition is Celal Özcan.

Controversy and criticism
In 1994, for the first time in the history of the German Press Council, the reporting of a foreign-language publication, the Hürriyet, was objected to. She received a public reprimand for incorrectly calling the Lord Mayor of Hanover Herbert Schmalstieg as the " PKK 'ler Lord Mayor". In 1996, the press council disapproved of three publications by Hürriyet, which indirectly called for attacks on monitor boss Klaus Bednarz . The newspaper received further reprimands, among other things, for taking over a report from another newspaper. When reporting on the house fire in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in 2008, the Bild newspaper complained that the press council was not sufficiently investigating complaints about Hürriyet articles.
In 2001, the head of the Hürriyet Europe edition, Ertuğ Karakullukçu, was dismissed. As chief commentator, Ertuğ Karakullukçu orchestrated most of the controversial attacks.
The head of the Essen Center for Turkish Studies , Faruk Şen , said in 2004: “The tide has changed. It relies more on integration . " The Taz held the paper in 2008 for populist and unhelpful to the notification of Germany and Turkey.
