Elisabeth "Libet" Werhahn (born May 17, 1928 in Cologne as Elisabeth Adenauer ; also as Libet Werhahn-Adenauer in public; † February 3, 2019 in Neuss ) was the youngest daughter of Konrad Adenauer and his second wife Auguste Adenauer . During his time as Federal Chancellor, she often accompanied her father on official occasions.

Life

Libet Adenauer was born in Cologne in 1928. She had six siblings; another brother followed her. She later lived with her family in Rhöndorf , where she saw the end of the war. She had previously visited the Gestapo headquarters in Cologne to find out where her parents were. Eventually she found her parents in the Brauweiler prison , from where she was allowed to take her mother with her. The father was only released at the end of November 1944.

In 1947, Libet Adenauer first met her future husband, the industrialist Hermann Josef Werhahn (1923–2016), in Rhöndorf , whom she married on May 2, 1950 in the basilica of Maria Laach Monastery . The marriage had five children.

Because Libet's mother Auguste Adenauer had died before her father took office as Federal Chancellor, she took on the functions of “Chancellor's wife” on numerous appearances and trips abroad. It was attributed to her that the meeting between Adenauer and John F. Kennedy in 1961 was "relaxed". On April 19, 1967 Konrad Adenauer addressed his daughter Libet, who had broken down in tears, his last words: “Da jitt et nix zo kriesche!” (There is nothing to cry about.)

She represented the Adenauer family until her death in 2019. In 2009 she accompanied Angela Merkel on a visit to the forest cemetery in Rhöndorf .

Libet Werhahn was committed to the CDU in Neuss from 1975 to 1994 , particularly in the areas of culture and social affairs, but also as chair of the committee for partnerships. From 1979 to 1989 she was a member of the city council in Neuss.

Libet Werhahn was buried in the main cemetery in Neuss.
