The Librem 5 is a free smartphone from the manufacturer Purism . The target of 1,500,000 US dollars was exceeded in a crowdfunding campaign .

Characteristics

The specialty of the Librem 5 is that it relies almost exclusively on free software , including free firmware , and free hardware . The manufacturer Purism has promised end customers security and privacy as well as complete controllability in the focus of development.

hardware

Instead of installing the hardware on the mainboard as compactly as possible , Purism decided to detach some hardware components from the mainboard and connect them using standardized interfaces . This enables almost complete replacement and retrofitting of components, with only a screwdriver being necessary. Furthermore, there is more control over these components, since, for example, the baseband (cellular modem) no longer has direct access to the processor. Three hardware switches ensure that data protection-sensitive components such as cameras, microphones and modems are no longer supplied with power and thus remain free from attacks or data collection when switched off.

Purism promises to make the hardware a non-trade secret and to publish the circuit diagrams in full after the investment is covered by the purchase of the smartphone. The plans for the Birch edition have already been published.

software

No Android or iOS is preinstalled , but PureOS , a GNU / Linux distribution based on Debian . This should provide both privacy and security by default, but can also be completely replaced by other operating systems. The manufacturer tries to bypass proprietary firmware as far as possible and replace it with free solutions. The same applies to the boot process carried out by Coreboot .

PureOS should also be convergent. This means that connected to a monitor, mouse and keyboard, the user receives a full-fledged desktop system . Both PureOS and many programs running there adapt their layout to the screen resolution provided and switch between touchscreen and mouse input methods for better usability. The creation of adaptive GTK apps is simplified by Purism's self-developed GUI library libhandy.

development

The Purism team works with Gnome and KDE and passes back software adjustments, such as Gnome Web or the Linux kernel , instead of maintaining their own forks .

publication

The release of the device was initially announced for January 2019. Purism later postponed the release to April 2019 due to CPU problems, after all it should be available in the 3rd quarter of 2019. The first edition of the device appeared on September 24, 2019. However, this was only issued to Purism employees. On November 27, 2019, the first buyers reported receiving their device. Subsequent editions should contain constant hardware and software improvements over the previous edition. The edition intended for the mass market is called Evergreen and should appear in the second quarter of 2020.
