The lichinales are an order of hose mushrooms (Ascomycota) and form alone the class of Lichinomycetes . The species form lichens with cyanobacteria as photobionts.
features
The species form gelatinous crust, shrub or leaf lichens. The fruiting bodies are disc-shaped apothecia , sometimes sunken. In some cases they are club-shaped, petiolate, sessile. They are fleshy, the peridium is often not clearly developed. The hymenium is mostly colored blue by iodine. The asci are thin-walled or thickened at the tip. They have no clearly developed apical structures. The asci often have an iodine-staining outer gelatinous layer. Eight to 100 spores are formed per ascus.
The ascospores are single or rarely multiple septate , ellipsoidal to spindle-shaped, translucent ( hyaline ) or pigmented.
Systematics
The Lichinales used to be part of the Lecanorales or Lecanoromycetes . However, DNA sequence analyzes showed that they form an independent group and, together with the Geoglossaceae, form the sister group of the Lecanoromycetes.
The following families are included in the order (with selected genera and species):
- Gloeoheppiaceae with three genera
- Heppiaceae with five genera
- Lichinaceae with 42 genera
- Peltulaceae with three genera
