Lichtenberg (Franconian noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lords of Lichtenberg were a Franconian noble family who were related to the Counts of Henneberg . This branch line of the Henneberger had its seat on the Lichtenburg in Ostheim vor der Rhön and was one of several branches of the family, which were jointly called "Popponische Linien" after their progenitor Poppo II. They did not have the title of count.

The line of the Lords of Lichtenberg emerged from the line of the " Lords of Irmelshausen " and was already extinct in the second or third generation.

history

origin

The Henneberger Poppo II. († 1118), younger brother of the ruling Count Godebold II. Von Henneberg († 1144), was the progenitor of the "Popponic Line" named after him. Poppo II had the following three sons, each of whom founded the lines named after their headquarters:

  • Poppo III. von Irmelshausen (* before 1131; † 1160)
  • Ludwig I. von Lengsfeld (1137–1164), von Frankenstein (* before 1131, † after 1164)
  • Gotebold III. von Wasungen (* 1107; † after 1164)

Poppo III. took his seat at the castle in Irmelshausen near Höchheim in the grave field and named himself after this "Poppo III. from Irmelshausen ”. He had the following three sons:

  • Heinrich I. von Irmelshausen (1156–1160), von Lichtenberg (1161–1165), von Henneberg (1161), († 1167)
  • Poppo V. von Irmelshausen, von Lichtenberg (1168–1179), († 1199)
  • Gotebold IV. Von Lichtenberg (1168–1176), from Irmelshausen-Habesberg (1169) († after 1187)

Development of the house

Around 1156 the eldest son Heinrich I founded his own line, which he called "Lords of Lichtenberg" after the Lichtenburg near Ostheim in front of the Rhön. The family castle in Irmelshausen has probably passed to the second son Poppo V.

After the death of Heinrich I in 1167, his two younger brothers Poppo V. and Gotebold IV also referred to themselves as "Lords of Lichtenberg". Poppo V. called himself after Lichtenberg for the last time in 1179. After that he probably moved his seat to Irmelshausen, after which he named himself in documents from the years 1179, 1186 and 1194. Poppos V's son Heinrich II. Von Sternberg (from 1199), († 1228) built Sternberg Castle in the Grabfeld , probably because Irmelshausen was not a free property, but only a fiefdom , and moved his seat there by 1199 at the latest. He was thus the founder of the line of the Lords of Sternberg .

Gotebold IV., Probably the youngest son of Poppos III. von Irmelshausen and brother of Poppo V. von Lichtenberg, referred to himself from 1169 as "Gotebold IV. von Irmelshausen-Habesberg" after the Habesburg Castle near Meiningen acquired by his father in 1156 . At the same time he called himself “von Lichtenberg” between 1168 and 1176.

Going out

Gotebold IV died around 1186. He presumably had a daughter who married the noble free Adalbert von Hildenburg . Since he called himself Lichtenberg after the rule in 1212 , she probably brought Lichtenberg and Irmelshausen into this marriage. Through their daughter, the property came to the son of Otto von Botenlauben , a member of a Gotebold branch line of the Counts of Henneberg.
