Sternberg (Franconian noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lords of Sternberg were a Frankish noble family who were related to the Counts of Henneberg . This branch line of the Henneberger had its seat at Sternberg Castle in Sternberg im Grabfeld and was one of several branches of the family, which were jointly referred to as "Popponische Linien" after their progenitor Poppo II. They did not have the title of count.

The line of the Lords of Sternberg emerged from the line of the Lords of Irmelshausen and was extinguished in the male line in the second generation in 1287.

history

origin

The Henneberger Poppo II. († 1118), younger brother of the ruling Count Godebold II. Von Henneberg († 1144), was the progenitor of the "Popponic Line" named after him. Poppo II had the following three sons, each of whom founded the lines named after their headquarters:

  • Poppo III. von Irmelshausen (* before 1131; † 1160)
  • Ludwig I. von Lengsfeld (1137–1164), von Frankenstein (* before 1131, † after 1164)
  • Gotebold III. von Wasungen (* 1107; † after 1164)

Poppo III. took his seat at the castle in Irmelshausen near Höchheim in the grave field and named himself after this "Poppo III. from Irmelshausen ”. He had the following three sons:

  • Heinrich I. von Irmelshausen (1156–1160), von Lichtenberg (1161–1165), von Henneberg (1161), († 1167)
  • Poppo V. von Irmelshausen, von Lichtenberg (1168–1179), († 1199)
  • Gotebold IV. Von Lichtenberg (1168–1176), from Irmelshausen-Habesberg (1169) († after 1187)

After the eldest son Heinrich I had already founded his own line around 1156, which he called " Lords of Lichtenberg " after the headquarters , the family castle in Irmelshausen probably passed to the second son Poppo V. After the death of Heinrich I in 1167, his two younger brothers Poppo V. and Gotebold IV also referred to themselves as "Lords of Lichtenberg".

Poppo V. called himself after Lichtenberg for the last time in 1179. After that he probably moved his seat to Irmelshausen, after which he named himself in documents from the years 1179, 1186 and 1194.

Development of the house

Poppos V's son Heinrich II. Von Sternberg († 1228) appeared in 1199 together with his father in a document from the Eichstätt monastery . He appeared in the document as a vassal of the Eichstätter church, which had inherited the margraves of Schweinfurt in the area around Königshofen in the grave field .

Heinrich II had received the area around Sternberg im Grabfeld (near Sulzdorf an der Lederhecke ) from the Hochstift Eichstätt as a fief . He had Sternberg Castle built on the site of today 's Sternberg Castle and moved his seat there in 1199 at the latest , probably because Irmelshausen was not a free property but only a fief . Heinrich II was thus the founder of the line of the "Lords of Sternberg". Heinrich II fell in the battle of Metzels in 1228 in the fight against Poppo VII von Henneberg († 1245) from the Gotebold line.

From the marriage of his son Albert († between 1253 and 1255) with Mechthild von Trimberg there was only one daughter named Lukardis von Sternberg († 1312), who with Heinrich III. von Frankenstein († 1297) was married from another Popponian line.

The other sons of Henrich II., Named Berthold II. († 1287), Hermann († between 1277 and 1278) and Heinrich III. († 1279) embarked on a spiritual career and entered the Würzburg cathedral chapter together . While Berthold was Berthold II. Bishop of Würzburg , Herrmann later became provost of the Neumünster collegiate monastery in Würzburg and Heinrich Dompropst in Bamberg . The daughter Sophia († 1262) was a nun in the Wechterswinkel monastery .

Bishop Konrad II of Worms († 1192), who had the westwork of Worms Cathedral built and consecrated the cathedral in 1181, also comes from this family .

Going out

Soon after the death of the last ancestor Albert von Sternberg, the eldest son of Poppo VII von Henneberg, Count Heinrich III. von Henneberg († 1262), through the mediation of Count Adalbert von Dillingen in 1255 the enfeoffment with the Eichstättischen fiefs of the Sternberg line. With Berthold II, the Sternberg line died out in the male line in 1287.
