Licio Giorgeri

Licio Giorgeri (born June 1, 1925 in Trieste , † March 20, 1987 in Rome ) was a general in the Italian Air Force . He was allegedly shot by terrorists.

life and death

Giorgeri graduated from the University of Trieste with an engineering degree in 1949 and joined the Italian Air Force as an engineer officer the following year. In 1987, as Lieutenant General , he headed the Department of Military Aircraft and all related armaments matters at the Ministry of Defense . In addition to his career in the Air Force, he also worked as a university lecturer in Rome and Trieste.

General Giorgeri was shot dead in Rome on the evening of March 20, 1987. Immediately afterwards, a terrorist group from the Red Brigades took responsibility for the attack. A letter of confession referred to the alleged role of Italy and Giorgeris in the Strategic Defense Initiative . Former Defense Minister Giovanni Spadolini immediately denied this alleged role. Subsequently, it was repeatedly pointed out that General Giorgeri had knowledge of the tragic end of Itavia flight 870 . When an Itavia passenger plane was shot down near Ustica on the evening of June 27, 1980 , Giorgeri was on board a Piaggio PD.808 , which took on tasks in the field of electronic warfare . In connection with the Itavia flight, several soldiers of the Italian Air Force were mysteriously killed.

Giorgeri left behind his wife and daughter Luisa, who died in 1994.

On the airfield Trento a is Lockheed F-104 as a gate Guardian issued, the General Giorgeri is dedicated.
