The Basilica of Our Lady of Dadizele ( Dutch Basiliek Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Dadizele ) is a Roman Catholic church in Moorslede , Belgium . The church of the diocese of Bruges is Maria consecrated and carries the title of minor basilica .

history

Dadizele was a famous place of pilgrimage as early as the 14th century . The basilica replaced a late Gothic pilgrimage church from the 15th century. It was erected on the occasion of the proclamation of the dogma declaration of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on December 8, 1854 on the initiative of Bishop Joannes-Baptista Malou. The foundation stone was laid on September 8, 1857 and on September 1, 1867 the first Holy Mass was celebrated. Pope Leo XIII. awarded the church the rank of minor basilica on January 31, 1882: next to the Basilica of the Holy Blood in Bruges, the only basilica in the diocese of Bruges. The basilica is particularly popular during the pilgrimages in May and September.

architecture

The basilica was built in the neo-Gothic style of the English architect Augustus Pugin by his son Eduard Welby Pugin with corrections, after his death in 1875 the plans were implemented by Jean-Baptiste Bethune . The church has a five-nave nave, a transept, a choir and a crypt. The stained glass windows originally came from A. Verhaegen, who also designed the crossing tower , which was completed in 1895. In the church you can see the 15th century alabaster statue with the statue of Our Lady of Dadizele. Repeated restorations took place.

Tomb

The tomb of the mayor of Dadizele, Jan van Veerdeghem , is in the basilica's crypt. He was knighted by Archduke Maximilian of Austria in 1479 and cowardly murdered in Antwerp in 1481. He played a prominent role in managing the conflicts between the Archduke and the cities and between the Archduke and the French King Louis XI.
