Overview map of the Liefkenshoek rail link

The Liefkenshoek rail link is a 16.2 km long railway line for freight transport in the area of the Port of Antwerp , which the marshalling yard bundle Zuid with the shunting yard Antwerp-Noord connects. It was inaugurated on December 9, 2014 and put into regular operation on December 14, 2014. The line connects the left and right banks of the Scheldt, thereby relieving the existing port connections through the Kennedy tunnel and the Berchem – Schijnpoort line. The Liefkenshoek rail link is intended to increase the share of rail traffic in container transport from the Deurganckdock .

Construction of the line began in September 2008 and cost € 765 million. It was carried out on behalf of Infrabel by the Locorail consortium , which consisted of the construction companies CFE , VINCI Concessions and BAM PPP .

The route runs roughly parallel to the Liefkenshoektunnel and includes the two tunnel structures Antigoon Tunnel and Beverentunnel.

The 6750 m long Antigoon tunnel has two tunnel tubes that are connected by 13 cross passages. 5.975 m were excavated with a tunnel boring machine , the rest was excavated in the opencast mine. The tunnel was the longest rail tunnel in Belgium when it was completed.

The shell of the 1200 m long Beverentunnel was built in 1978 together with the road tunnel for Ring 2 and was intended to serve a future port railway. The tunnel was built in an open pit before the Waasland Canal above it was built. The tunnel had to be renovated for use by the Liefkenshoek rail link.

The track is equipped with ETCS Level 2 .
