Cot (port)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A sundeck is an artificial deepening of the river bed at the berth of a ship. In this well a ship can also at low water the rest in no grounding or without the hull on the sole rests. Due to the mostly uneven sole, the trunk would come under stress conditions for which it was not designed, and in the worst case it would tear open. The expansion water depth at the berth depends on the draft of the largest ship that can approach the berth.

An example: The bulk cargo port on the Niedersachsenbrücke in the Jade approach to Wilhelmshaven does not have enough water depth for the large bulk carriers when the tide is low . The lying tubs that were already there were deepened again in order to be able to accommodate bulk carriers of the Capesize class with a draft of up to 18.50 meters.

Another example: The Alexander von Humboldt is to be berthed on the Schlachte in Bremen . A sundeck has to be dredged for this because the ship has a draft of 4.80 m, but the Weser is only 3.80 m deep at this point at low tide.
