Lila Lee , actually Augusta Appel (born July 25, 1901 in Union Hill , New Jersey , † November 13, 1973 in Saranac Lake , New York ) was an American actress . She was a busy actress during the silent and early talkies era.

Life

Lila Lee began her career as a child actress with the stage name Cuddles in Vaudeville and got her first film role at the age of 17. She became a popular actress after starring alongside Gloria Swanson in Male and Female , with Thomas Meighan in popular comedy The Charm School, and alongside Rudolph Valentino in Blood and Sand . In 1922 she was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars . She made the leap into the sound film era without any major problems. She had a substantial role in Lon Chaney's last film, The Unholy Three , in 1930 . In 1932 she refused to take the lead role in Shopworn , directed by Frank Capra . The part finally went to Barbara Stanwyck . Comparable bad decisions led to a rapid decline in the audience's favor. In 1937 she withdrew from the screen and then appeared occasionally on television and in the theater.

Her career has been hampered by bouts of tuberculosis . One of her three husbands was the actor James Kirkwood , with whom she sometimes fought violently in public and who was the father of her only son James Kirkwood junior (1924-1989).
