Lilí Álvarez

Elia "Lilí" Maria González-Álvarez y López-Chicheri (born May 9, 1905 in Rome , Italy , † July 8, 1998 in Madrid , Spain ) was a Spanish tennis player , author and journalist .

Life

In 1929 Álvarez and the Dutch Kea Bouman won the double title at the French tennis championships in Paris (now the French Open ) against the South Africans Bobby Heine and Alida Neave 7: 5, 6: 3. The Spaniard reached the final of the Wimbledon Championships three times between 1926 and 1928 , but lost one final against Kathleen McKane Godfree and two final against Helen Wills Moody . In 1930, 1931, 1936 and 1937 she reached the semi-finals of the French Open.

In 1930 she won the first women's tennis tournament in Rome .
