The lily basin (also: Albin-Müller basin ) is a fountain on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt .

History and description

The lily pool was laid out in 1914 according to plans by the architect Albin Müller . Müller was the winner of an internal competition held by the artists' colony for the design of the gently sloping lawn in front of the entrance to the Russian Chapel .

For the exhibition in 1914, he designed the fountain system with a rectangular basin (originally with a round border), which was on an axis with the main portal of the chapel . The water basin was built from shell limestone and elaborately tiled with colored ceramic tiles from the “Gailschen Dampfziegelei” in Gießen .

At the eastern edge of the basin is a colonnade resting on squat columns with a relief-like treated, tiled fountain wall. The parapet walls are decorated with rich reliefs. The sculptures "Maria and Joseph - rest on the run" created by Bernhard Hoetger conclude . The sculptures form a thematic reference to the chapel looming in the background.

In 1961 and 1962, the floor tiles were replaced during a comprehensive renovation . The round edging was dismantled. Around the year 2000 the original condition was restored.

Monument protection

For architectural, architectural and urban history reasons, the lily pool is a listed building .
