HJIM van Gasteren (previously known as Lilith Love ), full name Henriëtte Johanna Ignatia Maria van Gasteren (born September 9, 1964 in Sevenum , Netherlands ), is a Dutch art photographer and visual artist. The most common themes that can be seen in her work are about identity, women and their archetypes , gender bending, freedom and equality.

Life

Henriëtte van Gasteren was the youngest of the family with two children. Her father made wooden shoes for a living and was a postman. She has loved to write, draw and cook since she was a teenager. After her training at the Schoevers Academie in Nijmegen , she worked from 1983 to 2000 as secretary to the board.

From author to photographer

In 2005 she resumed writing. Her culinary-erotic story Kalfsbraadstuk op tagliatelle met een zachte saus van witte port en kaas ("Roast veal on tagliatella with a mild cheese sauce and white port wine") was published in the volume of Raadselige Roos 2005, a publication of the prose and poetry competition of the Literair Café Venray region . This was followed by her self-portraits on the Internet for illustration and publication , which supported her stories. First with a webcam , then with a simple compact camera . Since 2006, her life story has only been told through her photographs, which she takes herself, equipped with a reflex camera, tripod and remote control.

scandal

Her work led to controversy several times and was censored during an exhibition in the euregio house in Mönchengladbach and in the Rolduc conference room (former seminary) in Kerkrade . Your self-portrait Forgive me father, for…. from the denominational series I could 've had religion became the front page of the morning paper Sp! ts.

In 2012 she exhibited her works as one of the ten most important Limburg artists in the Pulchri Studio in The Hague , together with artists such as Ted Noten , Charles Eyck and Lei Molin. In the same year, her works were shown for the first time in two exhibitions in the context of Photoville International, an international association of photographers, in the USA: The Wonder of Woman and FotoFestival Naarden.

documentation

In 2012 she started her project A house is not a home . The decor for their self-portraits were strange houses. At the same time, another form of photography was born: a documentary about the Lyme disease patient Risja Steeghs, who was 21 years old at the time, who lived in the village . In addition to the traveling exhibition, Haus der Kunsten Limburg in Roermond also financially supported the publication of the photo book, both with the same title: Risja, a story by Lilith . Siebe Weide, director of the Dutch Museum Association, wrote the foreword for this. Hedy d'Ancona wrote the epilogue and was responsible for the book launch in Amsterdam . Artist Lieve Prins wrote the introduction. Frans Pollux, writer, journalist and musician, also took part in this project. He wrote a poem for Risja called De danseres (The Dancer).
