Lilly McElroy

Lilly McElroy (* 1980 in Willcox , Southern Arizona ) is an American photographer and action artist .

life and work

Lilly McElroy grew up as the daughter of a falcon hunter in Willcox.

She completed her photography studies in 2003 at the University of Arizona in Tucson and in 2006 at the SAIC - School of the Art Institute Chicago . In 2006 she studied as artist in residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan .

McElroy works with the media of photography , video and installation .

I Throw Myself at Men

She became known through her campaign I Throw Myself at Men . Between 2006 and 2008, McElroy threw herself into the arms of around 50 men she did not know whom she had previously spoken to directly in bars and clubs in Chicago and Kansas City. When she asked: "Can I throw myself at her?" most of them said yes. They were instructed not to bend their knees and either to catch McElroy in the jump or not. A friend photographed the moment of the collision. In 2008 the Werkschauhalle Leipzig showed a photo series of McElroy's 14 favorites.
