The rice field plant ( Limnophila aromatica ), also called aromatic swamp friend , is a species of the genus Limnophila (swamp friend) within the plantain family (Plantaginaceae) (formerly partly assigned to the Scrophulariacaea ). This aquatic plant is common in Asia and northern Australia .

Limnophila aromatica grows as an annual or perennial herbaceous plant up to 100 centimeters high.
The simple and seated foliage leaves are arranged cross-opposite or whorled. They are ovate to lanceolate, more or less hairy, pointed and sawed to notched on the edge.
The flowers appear axillary and individually or in racemose inflorescences. The stalked and pink to purple, bell-shaped, two-lipped flowers have a double flower envelope . The 4 stamens are enclosed and didynamic.
Small fruit capsules with a permanent calyx are formed.

Limnophila aromatica contains essential oils, including limonene . It is cultivated and used as a spice plant , especially in Vietnam , and more rarely in Cambodia and Thailand . Like other Limnophila species, it is also used as an aquarium plant.
