In LingoPad is one as Freeware published dictionary software . The program name LingoPad is an acronym for Lingo 4you P ersonal A dvanced D ictionary. Although originally designed exclusively for the English ↔ German language area, numerous other languages can now be installed as additional modules. In contrast to online dictionaries , the database is also available without an Internet connection .

Available languages

Online vocabulary update

The language packs that can be installed differ greatly in terms of quality and quantity . Individual language modules sometimes only contain a few thousand words. Others are still unchecked.

The language modules that are independent of the "program" LingoPad are mostly open source projects that are put together by committed volunteers.

The following languages ​​can currently be integrated:

  • no acoustic voice output
  • not natively available for Linux , Unix and Mac OS
  • Can only run under Linux with Wine

  • no sentence-wise translation possible
  • In the current version 2.6 version, direct word translation by mouse click or key combination does not always work correctly. Those who value this feature should - according to the author - continue to use version 2.5.1.

Further development

After the last release (Built 360) at the end of July 2008, further program development under Windows has been temporarily stopped. However, there are plans to program a completely new, platform-independent LingoPad for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows.

LingoPad Mobile for Apple iOS and Google Android has been in development since autumn 2010 .
