Lionel Casson

Lionel Casson (* as Lionel I. Cohen July 22, 1914 in Brooklyn , New York , † July 18, 2009 in New York ) was an American ancient historian who devoted himself to the study of ancient seafaring .

Casson studied at New York University , where he received his Ph.D. received his doctorate and then worked as a lecturer, interrupted from military service in the US Navy during World War II. From 1961 to 1979 he was Professor of Classics at New York University.

With a Guggenheim scholarship , Casson researched ancient maritime and trade history from 1952 and was able to travel through the Mediterranean for a year to study ancient port facilities. He summarized his research in several basic monographs. In addition, he also dealt with ancient everyday and library history as well as ancient Egypt.
