Lionel Hunter Escombe

Lionel Hunter Escombe (* 1876 in the colony of Natal , South Africa , † October 15, 1914 in London ) was a British tennis player.

Life

Escombe took part in tennis tournaments in England from 1899. In 1907 he reached the quarterfinals in men's singles at the Wimbledon Championships .

He took part in the indoor competition of the Olympic Games in London in 1908 , but was eliminated in the individual already in the first round. In doubles he made it to the semi-finals alongside Josiah Ritchie , but the two were defeated by Arthur Gore and Herbert Roper Barrett . They also had to give up the subsequent game for third place against the Swedes Wollmar Boström and Gunnar Setterwall , so that they only finished fourth.

In his last appearance at the Wimbledon Championships in 1909 he was able to reach the quarterfinals again, but had to give up against Herbert Roper Barrett when the score was 1: 2 sets. Then he ended his tennis career.

Escombe died in the London borough of Brentford in 1914 .
