Lionel Régal 2008

Lionel Régal (born July 21, 1975 in Lentilly ; † August 15, 2010 in Saint-Ursanne , Switzerland ) was a French mountain racer .

Career

After winning the national championship in France in 2005, 2006 and 2007, he was the first to double in 2008 , winning both the French national hill climb championship and the European hill climb championship in the racing car category. A Reynard 01L - Mugen-Honda from Formula Nippon was used .

Due to the fact that participation in all events of both racing series is not always possible, such doubles are a rare constellation. Due to possible deletion results and the coincidence of the national run ( Monts Dore was part of the French and European championships), the point loss due to overlapping dates was minimal. In 2009 the calendar was different and a defense at the EBM level was out of the question. Régal focused on the French championship, which he also won.

During the winter break, he has participated in the Andros Trophy since 2008 . In the French mountain championship he was on course for the title until his death; but there were still three races left.

Régal was one of the best hill climbers in Europe. His father, Marc Régal, drove hill climbs and died in 1997 in Tarbes-Osmets in the Lola F3000 am Berg. He was considered the pioneer of Formula 3000 on the mountain. Régal's toughest competitors in the battle for the French mountain champion title were his compatriots Fabien Frantz , Sebastien Petit and the youngster Nicolas Schatz. In 2009, however, Régal was again French champion. In the European Hill Climb Championship, Simone Faggioli was Régal's biggest opponent, who also won the 2009 title. However, Régal had only entered too few races. In 2010 he only took part in the EBM races in France and Switzerland.

On August 15, 2010, Régal crashed into a tree in a Swiss hill climb between Saint-Ursanne and Rangiers in the first race and died at the scene of the accident. The track was wet; in several places the water flowed in streams across the route.
