Lionel White (born July 9, 1905 in New York City , † December 26, 1985 in Asheville , North Carolina ) was an American writer and journalist who mainly wrote detective novels .

Life

Lionel White worked as a crime reporter and wrote thirty-eight detective novels between 1952 and 1978, which were initially only published as paperbacks by Gold Medal, and later also appeared as hardcover editions by EP Dutton. Many of White's novels have been translated into German; however, the editions are out of print. Some of his novels have been made into movies, such as Clean Break by Stanley Kubrick under the title The Killing and The Snatchers as The Night of the Following Day with Marlon Brando. Obsession is considered the novel for Jean-Luc Godard's film Pierrot le fou .

When his novel The Ransomed Madonna (1964) appeared, the New York Times described White as the “master of the great coup”. Quentin Tarantino named him in the credits of Reservoir Dogs as one of the sources of inspiration for the film.
