Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence
Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence KG (born November 29, 1338 in Antwerp , † October 17, 1368 in Alba , Italy ) was Earl of Ulster and Duke of Clarence .
Life
He was the third son of King Edward III. of England ( House Plantagenet ) and the Philippa of Hainaut . Since the second-born brother, William of Hatfield, had died before Lionel's birth, Lionel was second in line to the English throne after his eldest brother, Edward of Woodstock .
On August 15, 1342, the four-year-old Lionel married Elizabeth de Burgh, Duchess of Clarence, 4th Countess of Ulster , the daughter of William Donn de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster, six years his senior in the Tower of London . Due to the young age of the bride and groom, however, the marriage was consummated ten years later.
In 1345 and 1346 Lionel performed the duties of his father, who was in France, in England. Since 1347 he led from the right of his wife the title of Earl of Ulster . In 1355 he took part in an invasion of France. 1361 to 1367 he was governor of his father in Ireland, since 1362 he carried the title of Duke of Clarence . The king made unsuccessful efforts at this time to bring his son to the Scottish throne. As governor, Lionel also presided over the assembly in 1366 that, against his will, passed the infamous Kilkenny Statute , which forbade English-Irish marriages. As a result, Lionel gave up his governor post.
Lionel's first wife, Elizabeth de Burgh, died in Dublin in 1363 . The marriage resulted in a daughter, Philippa Plantagenet, 5th Countess of Ulster (1355-1382), whose great-great-grandson ascended the English throne as Edward IV . In 1368 Lionel married Violanta Visconti in Milan , the daughter of Galeazzo II. Visconti , Lord of Milan and Pavia, but died only four months later in Alba. He was buried in Clare Priory .
