The Tempodrom is a Berlin event location that was first launched in 1980 as an alternative venue on the west side of Potsdamer Platz , in the immediate vicinity of the then Berlin Wall , by the heiress and former nurse Irene Moessinger .

History of the venue

Potsdamer Platz

Moessinger realized a lifelong dream by investing the funds from an inheritance in a big top. After just a year, the dream seemed to be over - in March 1981 the circus was bankrupt . With a grant from the Berlin Senate , operations could continue. The cabaret artist Holger Klotzbach , who organized the circus equipment, was also involved in founding the Tempodrom in 1980 .

Great zoo

In 1985 the tent moved from Potsdamer Platz to the vicinity of the congress hall in the Tiergarten . Next to the big tent there was another, smaller one. During this time, the events and concerts took place under the motto “for free and outdoors” and were very popular in the summer months. From 1988 the world music festival Heimatklänge began in the Tempodrom .

After the fall of the Wall , the Federal Chancellery was built in the immediate vicinity , thus forcing the Tempodrom to leave the traditional and proven venue In den Zelten - the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl felt the tent and its audience as a security risk.

Postbahnhof

In May 1999 it opened its doors until the new building at the Postbahnhof . A similar venue, the “ Tipi at the Chancellery ”, is now located on the site next to the Federal Chancellery .

New Tempodrom

With private donations, compensation payments and government subsidies, a concrete building in the shape of a circus tent was built on the site of the former Anhalter Bahnhof and reopened as the New Tempodrom in 2001. The massive overrun of the planned construction costs (32 million euros instead of 16 million euros) led to the resignation of Urban Development Senator Peter Strieder ( SPD ) on April 7, 2004 . Since August 2005 the Tempodrom has been run by a management consultancy appointed by the insolvency administrator. Irene Moessinger withdrew from the Tempodrom in July 2005. In the course of the bankruptcy , court proceedings against the former managing directors Irene Moessinger and Norbert Waehl took place for breach of trust. The proceedings ended in acquittals.

On April 23, 2010, the Bremen-based KPS Group took over the Tempodrom. It avoided a threatened foreclosure auction, which the lender, Landesbank Berlin , had applied for.

The new Tempodrom building was built according to designs by Doris Schäffler and Stephan Schütz , employees of the Hamburg architects Gerkan, Marg and Partners , on the site of the former Anhalter Bahnhof on Askanischer Platz. The roof of the Cathedral of Brasilia by Oscar Niemeyer recalled is optically aligned to the shape of a circus tent and, with its futuristic white forms a contrast to the remains of the former station. The foundation stone was laid on May 21, 2000. It was officially opened with the awarding of the European Film Prize on December 1, 2001.

Roof construction

The 37 meter high roof structure stands on the base. 12 cm thick precast reinforced concrete panels were mounted on a steel girder structure. The construction rests on twelve steel roller bearings that divert the load downwards. This construction was also necessary because of the events in the Great Arena, which can produce great acoustic loads.

Floor plan

Under the roof there is a usable area of 7860 m². The interior is divided into the large arena for up to 4000 visitors and the small arena for up to 450 visitors. There is also the foyer. The small arena can be used both as an independent event room and as an extension of the foyer.

Liquidrom

In addition to the large and small event hall, the Liquidrom is the third event location in the building complex. A water basin with a diameter of 13 meters under a concrete dome, in the zenith of which is a skylight, represents the center of the relaxation and brine pool . The pool is also used for live concerts. Further facilities include various saunas, steam baths, a bar and a restaurant. Due to legal disputes during which the old tenant was terminated, the bathing area was closed from April 2005 to December 2007. It reopened on December 12, 2007.

power supply

The Tempodrom has a decentralized energy supply structure. In the energy center of the building, a combined heat and power plant with an electrical output of 80  kW and a thermal output of 140 kW generates heat and electricity according to the principle of combined heat and power. On the back of the building there are two solar systems , each with 90 m² collector area. The photovoltaic system generates electricity that is fed into the local network. The solar thermal system produces heat, for which there is a great need in the building to heat the Liquidrom. The three systems are operated by the Berlin Energy Agency .
