Lisl Steinitz

Elisabeth "Lisl" Steinitz (born December 16, 1912 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † February 11, 1991 in Rostock , Germany ) was an Austrian singer and actress .

Life

Elisabeth Steinitz made her professional debut in 1933 at the Österreichisches Städtebundtheater in Vienna. She worked as a soubrette and in the cabaret performances of her husband Hans Hofer . After the annexation of Austria , the Jewish artist was released from the Theater an der Wien and then fled to Prague with her husband in early May 1938 . There she continued her work on cabaret stages.

Steinitz and her husband were arrested in 1942 and deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto . There Lisl Steinitz appeared as a singer and actress in her husband's productions - revues like Es tut sich was . At the beginning of October 1944 she was deported to Auschwitz . As the Red Army approached , Lisl Steinitz was "evacuated" and taken to Mauthausen concentration camp . There the artist experienced her liberation.

Steinitz and Hofer initially returned to Prague, where Lisl Steinitz initially found employment as a theater lighting technician. In 1960 the couple settled in Rostock and continued their stage work at the local Volkstheater .
