List of Bavarian freight wagons

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Bavarian freight wagons is a compilation of all state railroad-owned freight wagons that were procured and used by the KBSt: EB between 1846 and 1920. The dates selected for the list correspond roughly to the ones given in the wagon registers. The selection of the time periods for the information on the wagon numbers results from the numbering periods relevant for the Royal Bavarian State Railways. The order of listing is based on the structure of the wagon directories.

Car numbers and directories

The oldest line-up of the Bavarian State Railways, the one in Bavaria. Hauptstaatsarchiv München, Verkehrsarchiv (VAM) department, dates from February 13, 1846 and is titled: "Directory of all people and: transport wagons." However, only the wagons that were assigned to the Munich-Augsburg line were recorded there. The wagons of the former private forerunner company are also included.

In addition to the track number and wagon type, the "tare" in "pounds", the dead weight, then in some cases the information by how much the tare differed from the original one written on the wagon and also the "carrying weight" for packing and freight wagons were listed "In" Centner ". This form of compilation of the wagon data is very likely due to a dispute between the Augsburg wholesaler Schmidt and the state railway administration. Both contractual partners repeatedly set different weights for the dealer's cargo. The railway apparently calculated the transport weight from the difference between the total weight of the loaded wagon minus the tare weight. However, checkweighing of empty wagons showed that they were all lighter than determined on delivery from the factory and written on the wagon as a tare. The state railway administration explained this with the drying process of the wood built into the car.

For both types of wagons - the "passenger wagons" and the "goods transport wagons" - the wagons were separated and numbered consecutively starting with "1". Because every number appeared twice, this first arrangement system became more and more confusing as the number of items increased. The generic symbol was still missing as a dimension for the classification scheme. This was introduced in the form of capital letters in 1858 by the "Royal Privileged Bavarian Eastern Railways" (BOB) and taken over by the State Railroad on May 15, 1867. The following categories were defined:

From around 1894 onwards, the generic symbols originally introduced by the Prussian state railways were adopted for the regional railways that were organized in the VDEV . From 1909 - the start of the German State Railroad Car Association (DWV) - these were supplemented with additions, so-called subsidiary symbols, in order to be able to differentiate in more detail the function and scope of the individual wagon types.

List of freight wagons, standard gauge

Sheet no. Is used for clear identification of the car. Used from the last and most extensive Bavarian car register from 1913. Since the wagon types were consecutively numbered in each wagon directory, different sheet numbers were used in older wagon directories for the same wagon type. It is therefore not a sample drawing number. Under sheet no. If known, the number from the list from 1897 is put in brackets.

Overview of the cattle wagons

At the beginning of the transport of cattle by rail, neither the BOB nor the state railways had special wagons. One made do with open high-sided gondolas. After several accidents, especially with the more nervous riding horses, the Bavarian State Railways discontinued the first special wagons for these valuable animals in 1849. Because of their setup, they can be called stable wagons. The first ten "Transport wagons for luxury horses" series "H" (see formerly sheet 153) were put into service by the Eastern Railways in 1859. They remained the only ones of their kind with this company. At the end of 1858, the first animal transport wagons came into use at the BOB .

Milk cart

For the transport of fresh milk to supply the population in the metropolitan areas and large cities, in addition to the use of covered freight wagons of the type Nm, special wagons were also procured. In addition to cooling devices, these also had a special interior to accommodate the milk canisters.

Overview of private freight wagons for special purposes (standard gauge)

In his scholarly treatise on private goods wagons on German railways from 1923, Hermann Andersen quantifies the number of wagons used by the Royal Bavarian State Railways in 1915 as a total of 336 tank wagons, 693 beer wagons and a total of 40 wagons of other origins. In addition to the private beer wagons, there are 748 state railway wagons which were rented to private customers.

Tank wagons

There were no really uniform types of tank wagons, but only basic principles with different designs and dimensions of the tank in individual cases.

Beer cart

A wide variety of senders were also obliged to use a minimum number of rail kilometers for the hiring of private beer wagons. The design and equipment of the cars were subject to the technical standards of the state railway. For the design of the car body in terms of size, loading volume, insulation and cooling, the various manufacturers developed their own standards, some of which were based on the pattern drawings of state railways, but some also represented completely their own developments. These were then offered to potential advertisers in a catalog. In the course of its use, there were also changes in the owner due to various takeovers among the breweries.
