This list of Buddhist patriarchs contains the Buddhist patriarchs of various currents.
The beginnings
In Zen Buddhism the idea is represented that the teaching of Buddhism was passed on through personal Dharma transmission , starting from the Buddha Śākyamuni , through a succession of patriarchs up to the present day. The historical correctness of the patriarchal succession as listed here is controversial in the historical sciences. In various other Buddhist traditions, the patriarchs are less relevant.
