List of Eastern Roman provinces
The division of the Eastern Roman provinces goes back largely to Diocletian's (284-305) twelve dioceses (dioecesis). A distinction was made between: Illyria (often divided), Macedonia, Asiana, Pontica, Africa, and the Diocese of the East. With the 7th century the old provinces disappeared and the new thematic system came into force.
