Ensemble old town Mühldorf am Inn

File number E-1-83-128-1

The settlement is mentioned in the 10th century as a city under Salzburg rule, but the Inn crossing, to which it owes its origin, was already used in provincial Roman times. Probably in the 13th century, Mühldorf found its ground plan within an arc of the Inn, as it were in a peninsular position. This shape results from the function of the city as a trading, stacking and transshipment point on the Inn, which was formerly used for a flourishing long-distance trade across the Alps.

Land map Mühldorf 1814

The dominant street, almost 500 m long through the entire oval of the city from the Munich gate to the bridge gate, in a slight bend on the river bank, is the town square. It provided the space necessary for the storage of freight and market traffic in the fortified city. It also divides it into a narrow southwestern and a northeastern, deeper half of the city that protrudes to the foot of the high bank. The latter is developed rib-like through seven old craftsmen's streets and a longitudinal connection running parallel to the former city wall as well as the church square with the parish church, which is emphasized away from the market traffic, while the narrow half is almost entirely occupied by very deep plots that border on the former wall and only in the lower part Part of it has a small square on the meadow.

The town square is almost completely enclosed, with mostly four-storey townhouses, most of which date from the late Middle Ages, with narrow facades rising above around 90 very deep plots. The houses almost exclusively belong to a historical type of town house, the moat roof house, which has developed as an urban type of the alpine flat-gable house in the Inn and Salzach towns. The closed construction, the horizontal of the gable or the grave roofs masking so-called advance walls that long sequences of road arbors, create uniform space walls which are sealed off beyond at the ends by doors and also on the streets junctions due to severe constrictions and bridging Schwibbögen barely noticeable Experiencing openings. The town hall, made up of three medieval town houses, is arranged on one long side in line with the town house facades. -

Smaller, lower town houses appear in the tradesmen's alleys, which are also built up in a closed manner, but here, too, the ditch roof house still predominates to a large extent.

The church square, which in the eastern tip of the larger half of the city is around the parish church, which dates back to the 10th century and is surrounded by smaller residential houses, the late medieval rectory with its garden and the large new buildings of the Caritas home, denotes in its extension the Old cemetery abandoned in 1891. In this area, west of the church square, the Salzburg administration also settled with two monumental ten-box buildings from the 16th century and the late medieval fron festivals. Until 1802, Mühldorf remained a well-fortified enclave of the Archbishopric of Salzburg in the territorial state of the Wittelsbachers, which was often attacked by the Bavarian dukes, but has almost completely lost its walling.

The ensemble also includes the two historic suburbs, the Spitalvorstadt in the south with the baroque Spitalgasse, the Hl. Geist-Spital and the Brückenstraße, and the Katharinenvorstadt in the northwest, which extends from the Münchner Tor to the former Bergtor (in front of Katharinenplatz 38) . The latter is a medieval street, which has lost the closed development in its middle part, as Merian shows it, but the maintenance lock from 1539 (tax office), the small expansion of the square in front of the set-back medieval St. Catherine's Church and some effective historical rows of facades in the inner and outer part still has.

With regard to the surroundings of the Mühldorf city monument, the wooded high bank slope north of the street Am Stadtwall as a shield against the newer parts of the city on the city hill is of particular importance.

City fortifications The city was surrounded by a circular wall with gate towers in the northeast and southwest and a moat; It was probably already fortified in the 10th century. The remnants of the ring wall built from tuff stone blocks date mainly from the 14th century; Major repairs were made in 1532.

Most of the fortifications had been removed since 1808, the Wiesturm on the southwest corner in 1810, and the moat was drained and leveled in 1835–37.

Visible or demonstrably preserved parts of the curtain wall:

in the east the connection between the former Haberkasten (Fragnergasse 3) and the former Kornkasten (Fragnergasse 5);

in the south along the back of the houses Auf der Wies 14, 16, 18, 20, 24;

In the west along the back of the houses on the Wies 4 and 6,

in the passage between Auf der Wies 2 and Luitpoldallee 28,

on the rear border of the properties Luitpoldallee 28 and Stadtplatz 54, 56

In addition, there are remains of the former curtain wall at least in the area of the foundations of many other buildings

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
