  1. The degrees of longitude and latitude - geographic coordinates - in this table originally come largely from the data stored in the National Register Information System. These agree in about 99% with the actual conditions. Etea one percent of the entries in the NRIS contain typing errors or otherwise imprecise information. However, many of the properties listed are up to 150 away from the information in the NRIS, because these are derived from the topographic maps of the United States Geological Survey and are therefore based on the North American Date of 1927 . These coordinates differ from the WGS84 used by most of the current online map services. This variation is not uniform across the United States; for Chicago, the figures are fairly accurate, but the longitude in Washington State is up to 4.5 seconds too high and in Main by up to 2.0 seconds too low. The latitudes differ by up to a second in Florida. The geographic coordinates in the list are partially corrected according to WGS84.
  2. The numbering in this list column is based on the order of the entries presented by the National Park Service ; the colors distinguish different types of protected areas of the National Park System with national significance (e.g. National Historic Landmarks ) from the other entries in the National Register of Historic Places .
