After the Constitution of the People's Republic of Romania came into force on April 13, 1948 and the break with Rome , until the fall of the last dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu on December 22, 1989, the following persons were ordained bishops (secret bishops) of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church :

Riti was secretly ordained a bishop in 1985 by Bishop Joan Maria Dragomir . It was the last secret episcopal ordination before the end of the Ceausescu dictatorship. Ritis ordination - valid under canon law - was not officially recognized. Therefore, Riti was not allowed to exercise episcopal functions. After the Communists came to power in 1948, the persecution of the Church in Romania began. The United Church according to the Byzantine rite had been banned and forcibly integrated into the Orthodox Church.
