This is a list of the high rise buildings in Edmonton , Alberta , Canada . Edmonton is home to over 800,000 residents. About 1.1 million people live in the metropolitan area. None of the high-rise buildings in Edmonton are among the tallest in Canada. The skyscrapers are significantly smaller in height than those of the directly competing neighboring city of Calgary . This can be explained by the fact that both cities are among the booming centers of the oil and gas industry. However, Calgary is home to the headquarters of the major oil and gas industries. Edmonton is predominantly headquartered in refineries and other support companies in the oil and gas industry. The city's building regulations, which limited the height of the high-rise buildings, also play a role; this limitation was lifted in 2013. Accordingly, buildings that are being built in the city center are currently allowed to have a height of over 200 meters. The first buildings that will exceed 200 meters and are currently under construction are the Stantec Headquarters and Delta Hotel. Both buildings are scheduled to be completed in 2018.
