List of war fishing trawlers (naval identifiers)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The List of War Fish Cutters (Navy Identifiers) is a sub-list of List of War Fish Cutters .

Basic information

The compilation of this list is based on numerous sources (see individual references).

The list sorting with regard to the war codes was based on the archive of KFK codes in the Chronicle of the Naval War 1939-1945 by Jürgen Rohwer together with Gerhard Hümmelchen in the Württemberg State Library, published by the Library for Contemporary History. Much information about KFK losses is based on war diaries and information from wreck divers.

Where and where the KFK was used after 1945

The largest number of these cutters remained in German use after 1945, with urgent mine clearance tasks being carried out under the direction of the Allied administration. Another part of these cutters was used for fishing and thus for the food supply of post-war Germany. The use of these cutters as deep-sea fishing ships or as " traditional ships" is for the time being the last chapter of these ships, which were assumed to have a short lifespan even at the time of construction - around 60 years ago. In addition to the individual information from the KFK, this list provides a historical and international overview of the use of the war fishing cutters.

There are several sources with different figures on the whereabouts of the KFK; This is due to the fact that the distribution of the KFK was reorganized several times by the victorious powers and, in addition, further shifts in numbers occurred later due to transfers back to the FRG. The first KFK distribution plan (A. Komarov, op.cit. Page 82) of December 6, 1945: USSR 146 - UK 147 - USA 148 (units), 1st plan revision: USSR 147 - UK 137 - USA 101 (units) , 2nd plan revision: USSR 147 - UK 136 - USA 101 (units) (see also Monakov, page 180). These contingents were later divided up by the victorious powers. The first use after the war was the German mine clearance service, which gave away a number of KFKs for other purposes. Some of the vehicles that had sunk after the war were lifted and put into motion, some were scrapped, and some of them remained unclear. Therefore, the following figures cannot be fully verified.

  • around 300 were initially used for the German mine clearance service
  • around 293 were used for fishing in Germany (around 60 ports)
  • 182 of the KFK remaining after the war (as reparations) as follows:
  • Soviet Union 140 (split between different countries)
  • France 26
  • Norway 9
  • Netherlands 5
  • Sweden 1
  • Greece 1

After use by the German Navy, the following were left:

  • Remain in the follow-up period
    • Greece 3
    • Tanzania 4
    • former Eastern Bloc currently unclear
    • In 2001 around 24 KFKs with German registration are said to have existed

The numerous documented assignments and the resulting transitions are remarkable for the IDs:

  • Reorganization of the 3rd submarine hunting flotilla (2) ( Baltic Sea (Swinoujscie) ), whose cutters were used for evacuation (see Escape via the Baltic Sea: Company Hannibal ). On 4th / 5th April 1945 at the company "Walpurgisnacht" 25 KFK were used to evacuate the Oxhöfter Kämpe (Oksywska Kępa) to Hela .
  • Identification of the KFK according to the original document The German Navy in Norway (as of May 1, 1945)
  • Identifications of one hundred and nine KFK archived under the title “German naval vessels in Norway at the time of the capitulation May 9, 1945” (document number: AIR 15/476 available in National Archives, Kew, London.)
  • Identifiers beginning with K ..., which were used for a short time within the German Mine Clearance Service (GMSA), were then replaced by further identifiers or ship names according to the further use of the ships.
  • Identifiers in the acquisition of 382 ships in the transfer of ownership from OMGUS to the management Federal Republic of Germany have been logged
  • Identifications contained in document FO 936/1406 (from 1952) on the sale of various war fishing cutters by British administration.
  • Fisheries identifiers

K = IDs of the German mine clearance service from 1945

  • The KFK numbers were simply used, but the prefix "KFK" was shortened to "K".
  • The following lists contain only the KFK. They do not represent the complete stocks of the associations, which also included numerous other ships of other types!

Divisions under British supervision but independent management

The German mine clearance service was formed in 1945 on the instructions of the Allies from the remaining parts of the navy and had the task of clearing the sea mines in German coastal waters. For this purpose, six mine clearance divisions were formed from former parts of the navy.

French mine clearance management

This mine clearance service was not subordinate to the German mine clearance service. The service was mainly carried out with minesweepers of the former minesweeping flotillas, which were stationed in France until the withdrawal of the Wehrmacht in September 1944. B. the minesweeping flotillas of the 3rd and 4th Security Divisions with an additional 6th outpost flotilla. The German crews of the boats evacuated under French leadership. 13 KFK were parked as a reserve.

German mine clearance service in the Baltic Sea under Soviet leadership

About 100 mine detection u. Clearance boats that had been awarded to the Soviet Union at the Potsdam Conference were surrendered. These ships were used by the Maritime Police Headquarters and its predecessor organizations for mine clearance and evacuation escorts , among other things .

KFK in the German Navy

In particular due to the dissolution of the Navy and the German Mine Clearance Service, a number of KFKs were taken over for use in the Federal Navy. "BGS-See precursor organizations" can sometimes be identified as previous owners.

Within the German Federal Navy, the KFK were listed in Class 386 and Class 740 as W .. H .. KW .. and Y ....

Identification as harbor protection or coast guard boats of class 368 ("war fishing cutter")

From July 1, 1956, "H" identifiers were used. "H" stood for "harbor protection boat" or "harbor protection squadron".

In 1960 the "H" was replaced by "KW" identifiers with the same numbering. "KW" stood for "Coast Guard Boat" or "Coast Guard Squadron". The KW identifiers corresponded to identical NATO W identifiers.

  • 368/01: KW01 or W1 (?? / 1956 to ?? / 19 ??) ex H1 → KFK 309
  • 368/02: KW02 or W2 (?? / 1956 to ?? / 19 ??) ex H2 → KFK 613
  • 368/03: KW03 or W3 (07/1956 to 08/1963) ex H3 → KFK 561, and also KFK 561

  • 368/11: NORDWIND (W43) (from 07/1956 to 08/1969), later NORDWIND (Y834) (08/1969 with interruptions until 12/2006), → Nord series from the Burmester shipyard → hull number 2893, and also → North wind

Class 740 (measuring boats, ..., ...)

  • 740/24: Radio loading boat Y 829 (from 12/1965 to 5/1990) → KFK 561, and also → KFK 561

Identification of other navies

In particular, through the dissolution of the Navy and the German Mine Clearance Service, war fish cutters were placed with owners in Europe and beyond.

Soviet Navy

From the literature, 29 CFCs are known by codes in the Soviet Navy; of these, the following 29 CFCs in Varna and Constanța were taken over or restored (Monakov, page 167).
